Configure EndNote to Interact with Word

EndNote™ Basic has a plug in to interact with MS Word called Cite While You Write™.  You will need to install the plug in for your system.Install Cite While You Write

  1. Go to the Downloads tab in EndNote Basic.
  2. Choose the Cite While You Write™ plug in for your system.
  3. Close all Microsoft applications such as Word and Outlook
  4. Open the .exe file
  5. Once installed, open Word.
  6. There should now be an EndNote Tab in the Word banner. Proceed to click on the EndNote tab. If it is showing as EndNote 21 instead of EndNote,
    click on
Preferences > Applications > EndNote Online.
  7. Under EndNote>Preferences>Application you may also need to change the URL toEndNote Word Preferences  http://www.myendnoteweb.com/
  8. Ensure that your e-mail address and password are the ones for your new EndNote account.
  9. Do not use the red Word Add-ins in the Word tool bar to attempt to set up this plug in. It defaults to the new, not-free version of EndNote.
  10. If you are logged into EndNote Basic, EndNote and Word will now share citations you have collected into your EndNote groups.
  11. Set the citation style in the tool banner.
  12. You should be able to begin inserting citations in the text of the Word document by placing the cursor where you want the citation to be in the text of your document.
  13. Click on Insert Citations.
  14.  Search for the author of the resource by typing the last name and clicking Find.
  15. Click on the proper citation and press Insert.
  16. A reference list will be created at the end of the Word document.
  17. Additional references may be added later by the same person.  Having multiple people entering citations through EndNote from different computers may cause issues.
  18. Do not manually try to input citations with superscripts and typing in the reference list.  If you want to add citations, add them inside of EndNote and import them to the document.
  19. The citation style may be changed even after inserting the citations. Use EndNote to Insert Citations in Word
