Removing Duplicate Citations

When searching in several places such as databases and Google Scholar, EndNote Duplicatesyou will likely import the same citation multiple times.  There is a way to delete these duplicates. 

  1. Enter EndNote Basic.
  2. Click on Organize.
  3. Click on Find Duplicates.
  4. This will bring up a list of citations that are duplicates with the second one check marked.
  5. Click the Delete button to delete the duplicates.
  6. Keep in mind that if you have intentionally put the citation in different folders, it will delete the duplicate one. 

Creating Quick Bibliographies

It's easy to create a quick bibliography of citations you have collected in a group. EndNote Bibliography

  1. Enter EndNote Basic.
  2. Click on Format>Bibliography.
  3. Choose the reference group.
  4. Chose a bibliographic style such as APA, MLA or JAMA.
  5. Choose a file format such as RTF or TXT.
  6. Click on Preview & Print.
  7. A pop-up window will appear with text you can copy and paste.

Finding Journals for Manuscripts

EndNote offers a service that will try to assist in matching your manuscript to a journal.  EndNote is a Clarivate product and so is Web of Science.  Thus, the matching product used to is called Master Journal List and it will search journals indexed in Web of Science. Remember that there are other journal matching services such as  Elsevier Journal Finder and Springer Nature Link Journal Finder

  1. Go to EndNote.EndNote Manuscript Matching
  2. Click on Match.
  3. Either search by a keyword in the Search Journals box, or
  4. Click on Match Manuscript. 
    • Click Log in. 
    • It will either take you in because you are logged in to EndNote in the same window or you should log in with the same credentials you used for EndNote.
    • Type in the title and abstract for your manuscript. 
    • Click Find Journals.

EndNote Click PlugIn

EndNote Click is a browser plugin.  You will need to create an account with EndNote Click and link it to your EndNote account. Then it may help you search for the PDFs of articles and keep them in a locker inside of EndNote Click.  You could also save the PDFs in your own folders.

The icon looks like a puzzle piece in your browser toolbar.  You can notice EndNote click working when you search PubMed and and other places on the internet by the little purple links under citations.  

Exporting References

EndNote allows you to export references to another citations manager such as Zotero or Mendeley.Exporting from EndNote

  1. Click on Format>Export References.
  2. Choose the group to export.
  3. Choose the export style.  RIF is the most widely accepted style. 
  4. Click Save.
  5. This will create a bibliographic file in your Downloads.
  6. Import that file into another citation manager.
