Exporting Several Citations from Google Scholar

If you have searched in Google Scholar and found a number of citations you would like to download, you can do so by saving items to your personal "Library" of citations and download them individually or in a batch. This will export citations not the entire articles.

Please note: You will need to be logged in to a Gmail account. Also, by default, this will allow you to download 10 citations at a time. To download more, navigate to the Settings in Google Scholar to set the display to 20 items. (20 items is the maximum number.)

1. Click on the star just below citations you'd like to save to add the item to "My Library".  You will be asked to chose a label if you have already created labels.

2. Use the "My Library" link to see your saved citations.

3. Chose the label (folder) from which you want to export citations.

4. Click on the Export all link to export all of your citations. "All"  means what is showing on the page.  You may change the number of items per page under settings.

5. Select the format that you would like to download from the list.

6. The exported file will be saved in your downloads folder on your computer.  Open your bibliographic citation management software and import the file from the downloads folder into your software.

Working with a Single Citation in Google Scholar

The above method would allow you to export several citations at a time.  If you would prefer to work with only one citation, there are a couple of methods:

1.  Click on the cite button under the citation to bring up examples of the citation in several styles.  Be aware that there are frequent errors in these types of created citations. Always check the style manuals.

2. Export individual citations to a bibliographic citation software by either clicking on cite and then the software name such as EndNote or by clicking on Import into EndNote that was an option under Google Scholar settings.  You would need to open the software and import each citation individually from the download folder this way.

Other Settings to Assist in Exporting Citations

There are several things you can do to assist exporting citations from Google Scholar to a bibliographic citation manager.

  • Have a Gmail account open while searching Google Scholar.  This will let you save citations under a label in your library.
  • Set the "Results per page" to be 20 instead of 10.
  • Set the Bibliography manager under settings to show links to import citations into the format of your citation management software such as EndNote or Zotero.
  • Set the library links to show the TLU library.
  • Have your bibliographic citation manager such as EndNote open in the same browser as Google Scholar.
