Google Sample Search Strategies

Go to the Advanced search on the left side of the page.

Enter your search terms in the blanks.  To search for exact phrases, put your search terms in quotation marks.

Notice how each search box can be used to tailor your searching.  You don't need to use all of the search boxes but the above were filled in as examples of potential searches.

  • The first search box will search for all of the words.
  • The second would look for the exact phrase.
  • The third would allow you to search for different terms that might be synonymous.
  • Use the fourth box with care.  It will get rid of any articles that have that word in them.  In this case, it would get rid of articles with the word metal in them because we are not searching for the word lead as a form of metal.
  • Searching for the words in the title of the article would garner fewer results than if you searched for the words anywhere in the article.
  • Use the author search if you know an expert in the field.
  • Use the date limiter if you know the time frame you need.
